The Sun (Surya) is one of the 5 principal tantrik deities, the others being Lord Shiva (The Destroyer), Lord Ganesha (the remover of obstacles), Mother Shakti and Lord Vishnu. Moreover, He is the leader of the 9 planets (graha) and, in later times, worship and veneration of the Sun by the Saura division of the spiritual practitioners became worship of his son, Lord Shani or Saturn, and took on something of a dark color.

The Sun signifies power, authority, promotion, vitality, status, gold, medicine, wheat, victory, velour, fame, honor, relationship with the father in the present life, benevolence of the government and the person, who are in power. According to the ancient sacred texts, Lord Rama (the 7th avatar of Lord Vishnu) prayed to Him for strength, power and a victory before battling the demon – Ravana.

In astrology, the Sun signifies ruby, royalty, red cloth, red coral, father and gold (financial wealth) among other things. In Medical astrology, the Sun rules brain and head among body parts and boils, fever and pimples among sufferings and diseases.

In Vedic astrology, Surya is considered a mild malefic on account of his hot, dry nature. Furthermore, He is exalted in the sign Mesha (first sign in Indian Astrology), is in mulatrikona in the sign Simha and is in debilitation in the sign Tula. In addition, He is lord of 3 nakshatras or lunar mansions: Krittika, Uttara Ashadha, and Uttara Phalguni.

Like some other deities, such as Lord Shiva (who are worshiped by saints, asuras – demons and normal worshipers), the Sun has a following of the same kinds of beings. A group of Raksasas known as Yatudhanas were the followers and wandered with him. It is mentioned that Bhauvana the Daitya offered a prayer to Lord Surya with the Rathantara saman and was immediately turned into an elephant.
